Whatever their specialty or level, nearly all professionals in business today find that presentations are part of the job. Unfortunately, the prospect of public speaking strikes fear into the heart of millions, outranking death and flying as people’s number one fear.

The benefit of good speaking skills is that they enable you to communicate your ideas to others. Good speakers use speech as a way of communicating their ideas and gaining support for them. Poor speakers may have equally valid ideas but may never see them implemented because they are unable to share their vision with others who can help the ideas become reality.

The best thing you can do to improve your speaking skills is practice, practice, practice. There are many different situations that give you the chance to practice. Volunteer to give your project team’s update at the next department meeting, talk to a club or school group about a topic, or give tours to prospective new hires.
